Gobies (Gobiidae And Microdesmidae)

Gobies Family Characteristics:

Comparatively little is known about this very large family. In the wild, gobies are found in several different locations: tidal shallow beaches, on the coral reef itself, and on the muddy seabed. Some species are even found in fresh water. All Gobies rely on having a secure bolt hole in which to hide when danger threatens. Such 'bolt holes' may be located within sponges, caves, crevices or may simply be burrows in the sand bed.

The gobies are endearing little characters for the aquarium. The colors of the gobies can be quite brilliant. Their bodies are elongate, the head blunt with high set eyes. Gobies can be further distinguished, by the presence of a 'suction-disc' formed by the fusion of the pelvic. fins.

Sexing gobies can be difficult, although females may become distended with eggs at breeding time and there are the typical differences in the size and shape of the genital papillae, if you can see them! In some species, the male may change color or develop longer fins during the breeding period. Spawning occurs in burrows or in sheltered areas, with the eggs being guarded by the male. Several gobies have been spawned in captivity. Gobiosoma oceanops and Lythrypnus dalli, for example, will breed willingly in the aquarium, but rearing the young fry is not easy.

Diet And Feeding:

Gobies are carnivorous fishes that will eat brineshrimp, finely chopped meat foods, frozen foods and Daphnia.

Aquarium Behavior:

Many reef-dwelling species provide cleaning services for larger fishes, the cleaning sequence following the pattern described for the cleaner Wrasse.
