FileFish (Monocanthidae)

Filefish Family Characteristics:

Filefish have two dorsal fins, the first being a rudimentary spine which can be locked into position. The ventral fins are reduced to a single spine. The skin a rough in texture, which has given rise to the fishes' alternative common name of Leatherjacket's. The teeth are developed for nibbling. Most species occur around Australia.

Diet And Feeding:

In the wild, filefish use their tiny mouths to feed mainly on polyps and algae. This may cause initial problems in the aquarium until they can be persuaded to accept alternative foods.

Aquarium Behavior:

Despite their similarity to triggerfish, filefish are generally smaller, less active and - once acclimatized and feeding well - make good additions to a community tank.

List Of Popular Aquarium Filefish:

  • Tassel Filefish (Chaetodermis pencilligerus)
  • Colored Filefish (Pervagor melanocephalus)
  • Fantail Orange Filefish (Pervagor spilosoma)
  • Matted Filefish (Acreichthys tomentosus)
